Nearly $3 million sought from the federal government for projects in Cabarrus County was left out of a budget approved by the U.S. House 2 weeks ago.
The omitted funding includes money for Kannapolis to improve N.C. 3 near the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. Without the money, the city could have to find public funding for the biotech center's immediate needs, City Manager Mike Legg said.
Other projects whose funding wasn't approved include improvements at Concord Regional Airport and improved radio equipment for local law enforcement officials.
Local leaders were depending on U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes, a Concord Republican who put the earmarks in budget bills that were going through the budget writing process last year.
But Republicans didn't pass all the spending bills for this year before Democrats took control of the House and Senate last month.
Robin Hayes, a Concord Republican blames Democrats of course but fails to mention that last year's "do-nothing" Republican Congress failed to pass 80 percent of the Appropriations bills and, instead, dumped them on the new Congress.
If they had actually done some work all the spending bills would have been passed before Democrats took over.
Democrats have a good reason not to approve the spending. They say they are dedicated to restoring fiscal discipline and eliminating the Republican deficits. That means making some tough, yet responsible, choices. By creating a record deficit of 9 trillion dollars republicans have taken out a monstrous loan from our grandchildren. Someone has to clean up that mess and clearly the new Congress understands that.
So the question is: What has Robin Hayes been doing in Congress to earn the $165,000 we pay him each year?
Turns out he gives post offices new names.
During his whole career Hayes has introduced a total of 42 bills or resolutions in the House and only four have gone on to become public law. Of the four bills he's introduced or sponsored in the past 8 years that have been signed into law, three of them have been to rename buildings after people. Keep in mind that in this whole time period Republicans controlled Congress.
Isn't it time for a Congressman that cares about his constituents?
Apparently 49.86% of the voters in the last election thought so. Now if we can only get 0.3% more in 2008 everything will be alright.

Does Congressman Hayes actually do anything?

Looks like politics 101 to me -
1. Dems gain power.
2. Eliminate projects from GOP districts.
3. Hear complaints about how the community has been hurt.
4. Response - "If you would elect a Democrat, this wouldn't happen!"
5. Paint the Republican as ineffective, and work to get him out of office.
6. Start the process over again.
In case you are wondering, I get this response when commenting why our roads are in such bad shape in the county, and why we haven't had a DOT board member in over 20 years from Cabarrus County - We are to Republican for the Democrat policial machine that dominates our state government!
Your argument doesn't make any sense because the money we're talking about here was in the FEDERAL budget. The STATE government doesn't have anything to do with that.
Nobody needs to paint Robin Hayes as ineffective, he's done a pretty good job of that himself.
Robin and the republican congress barely worked 3 days a week in the past years, maybe if they had worked five days (like the democratic congress is doing now) they would have had plenty of time to pass more than 20% of the appropriations bills?
If you do only 20% of your job and you got fired, would you then complain about the guy they hired in your place doing all of the work but doing it differently?
This is a reminder of how the republican commissioners in Cabarrus county sold out to Rupert Murdoch, an Australian ga-jillionaire gives a measly (by his standards of course) endowment, to a school he has never visited, to build a building.
Then a bunch of non-Cabarrus natives can come to town to work their high-paying jobs, maybe eat at what-a-burger every now and then (pillowtex unemployment solved!).
With this guy’s party out of control (republicans), we see his priorities.
The Concord Regional Airport? Or should I say NASCAR Airport!? I can’t fly here, and unless you have your own plane and money to pay for storage, this will not be your arrival destination anytime soon. So should we pay for its maintenance?
As far as radios for first-responders, wasn’t this taken care by the republican congress from before? They eliminated increased funds.
Lets end wealthy politicians who spend YOUR money, then expect you to be grateful. This is a travesty when the personal wealth of someone like Robin Hayes or Murdoch is enough (and then some) to solve the problem, yet they blame other sincere officials, or the system.
"ucitydem"
For the love of God will you drop the Woe is me crybaby speach and stick to the topic at hand!
Robin Hayes is very ineffective and always has been. But all the democrat candidates who ran before Larry Kissel would have been just as ineffective in a republican controlled congress.
And as for larry kissel. Well I guess his little cheap gas sales didnt pay off as well as he'd hoped for.
And the democrat congress working so tirelessly for us Americans, whoop te do. I'm middle class, no, not rich, no, not a welfare king so all that work is doing absolutely nothing for me or my family. (nothing but raising my taxes.)
And in North Carolina, my votes are thrown in the trash because I refuse to vote for the "legislators of fairness" or the "legislators of morality" and we cant have that now can we?
It is unfathomable to think that there is this much polarization between two so equally ineffective sides...
Ucitydem, do you live in Cabarrus County? Its David Murdoch and he's from California. If you're trying to appear intelligent, at least get the name and continent correct.
