Ok, I won't doubt My readers again. When an "anonymous" commenter posted the following comment on an earlier post of mine I was very skeptic:
Coy is not the only official in Cabarrus County dealing with sex issues - Does anybody know why 15 Sheriff's Deputies were fired after a wild party??? I hear there was wife-swapping going on...I thought that rumor was so crazy that I refused to post the comment at first. Then I heard the rumor from a few other people as well. Then I saw an article in the Independent Tribune today.
An undetermined number of Cabarrus County deputies have been disciplined for inappropriate actions after an investigation of off-duty parties, according to Sheriff Brad Riley. As far as I know nothing really illegal went on, so I'm not sure why the deputies should be disciplined, but I'm sure we'll learn more details in the following days.
The Sheriff himself is not involved at all and from the article is also doesn't look like the deputies were fired, but I guess this proves that old saying "where there's smoke, there's fire" again.

I to have heard several stories from other employees there about this. There is one particular person that threw a lot of "strange" parties. What is happening to our county.
People should not worry about what people do while they are off. Sheriff Riley has everything under control and if you were not at the party, then you don't know anything. People are blowing this out of proportion and should worry about their own lives. I support the Sheriff Office 100%.
Where did I say that I don't support the Sheriff??? I clearly said that the Sherif is not involved at all in this, he was just the guy disciplining the "partying" deputies.
I'm not worried, I just thought it was an interesting story. Since you read it, I presume you thought so as well.
My guess is the Sheriff fired them for inappropriate action and then somebody took legal action to protect their job and he had to rehire them? Does anybody know??
I'm not sure I understand. The Sheriff actually did a press release to say that nothing criminal happened but that he disciplined people. When does anyone do a press release to let the public know that he has handled an internal matter? I've heard rumors of an officer that got caught stealing something from a store a month or two ago and got fired!! I didn't see a press release for that and that seems like a much more serious matter.
I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. I think we need to remember these deputies put their lives on the oline for us every day and what do they have to show for this: they get to have their whole lives turned upside down for the sake of going to a party while not on duty at the privacy of someones home. I dont think this effected a life of a single person they risk their lives for daily. I also think that the Sheriff tends to forget he is an elected official that has tied up man power and tax payers monies while staying late night with the chief and captians that need the to clean up their own back yards.Does the Sheriff Riley really think this press release will get him re-elected? Just remember all the kings horses fall with him. I support the deputies 100%. What they do in their private life in their own home and in a legal manner is their business and should not be made a public to make the higher officials look better!!!!!!!
The sheriff can and will discipline people for anything he feels in "wrong." I do know that these parties were attended by several officers, including 1 captain and several detectives. Also one of his Deputies was arrested last night by the SBI for an incident that happened in the jail. It has been investigatede and the county had to pay substancial medical bills and pay off the inmate to keep it from becoming a lawsuit. And lets not forget about the sheriff's little trip to the FBI school a few years ago, where the Cabarrus county tax payers bought PLane tickets home for him, somethimes for as little as 12 hours. Is this really the way we want or sheriff's office run? I support the deputies, but wonder about the administration. When deputies are to busy checking the sheriff's supporters business to make sure the doors are locked, instead of arresting DWI's on Hwy 601. I know deputies who were "talked to" for writting to many tickets.
This is off the subject of a party, but still about the Sheriff and the way he has handled things. I saw in the tribune that there was a bomb scare at the Department of Social Services and the Charlotte/ Mecklenburg Police Bomb Squad had to be called in to take care of the situation. I thought the sheriff’s office had a bomb squad that handled things like this. I thought our tax dollars went to buy all this equipment and for those guys to be trained. Why are we spending the money on this if we can not use them? I have heard Sheriff Riley during his campaign say things he has done by having a bomb squad, again why are we not using them? If Charlotte is going to come for free why not use them and save the tax dollars. I hope the sheriff and his administration know what they are doing. Come on guys lets use our resources if we are going to spend our tax money on it.
I have heard from an employee at the sheriff’s office since I started writing this that there was not a bomb technician on duty to handle this call. This should never have been a problem. This could be handled simply with scheduling. Come on Sheriff!!!
Consider me "Right on 49". I am a native of Harrisburg (a truly dying breed), and I have never seen the county in such a sorry state due to the corruption of its officials, and you newer folks can believe me when I say that it's been pretty bad at times over the past 40 years. What really ticks me off now is the double standard:is it ok for the sheriff's department to exhibit "bad moral judgment", yet Mr. Privette is raked over the coals for the same? Adultery is adultery, plain and simple. I happen to think it depends on "who you know" or how much of a threat you are to certain political blowhards as to what the severity of your punishment will be. Add to this the fact that certain officials are pushing for a water park when we are in a drought and have to buy/steal our water from another county, and you can't convince me that there aren't certain elected officials who are getting their palms greased by the developers while older people can barely pay their property taxes anymore. Forget right or left wing politics--where is common sense and integrity? Going the way of the Harrisburg native, I'm afraid. These comments will probably be deleted before they even reach the blog, but I hope Mr. Privette DOESN'T resign. Score one for the underdog at last.
First of all, this was about some wild parties a few deputies organized, the Sheriff himself has nothing to do with this.
Acting a little "wild" at a private party is not against the law. Hiring a prostitute at least 6 times on the other hand is against the law. See a difference there?
I'm also sure none of those deputies have in the past called someone an enemy of God for having one drink. Mr. Privette on the other hand has.
So this is definitely not a double standard, it's the difference between acting "inappropriately" (deputies)and violating the law while being a hypocrite at the same time (Coy Privette). I would say that's a HUGE difference.
By the way, I publish all comments, unless they're disgustingly rude.
I prefer however that people post their name together with their comments.
Disciplined? I have heard fired, and made to resign.
There was something going on.
I disagree that this is not about the Sheriff, but about the deputies. More people seem comcerned about the way the Sheriff is handling his office than I ever realized. How he uses his office and his huge budget may be more important than any issues about people's private lives!!!
I would like to know when and where Coy made the statement Mr Left wrote;
"I'm also sure none of those deputies have in the past called someone an enemy of God for having one drink. Mr. Privette on the other hand has." Coy has opposed alcohol for many years and I have been involved in political activities around/with him since 1981 and I have never heard that quote.
Coy made a mistake, but I can forgive and forget if he mends his way. He is the only commionsier that has not sold out to special interests. By the way, have you ever thought about why the SBI got involved in a case of hiring a prostitute, a misdemeanor. I wonder who/why they got involved. Maybe something to do Kann/Murdock?
First of all, "Mr. Left" has a name, it's on ever single page of this blog. Apparently your name is "Anonymous". I will answer your questions as soon as you tell me your name.
Mr. Wernaers, I am with you I think if you are going to post something positive or negative you should be man or woman enough to leave you name attached. I think things that happened "off" duty for these deputies needs to stay private and if nothing illegal happened there should not be an issue. I am sure most of the people posting these comments are very hypocritical because I am sure that most of them have been to social gatherings "Parties" where crazy things happen. It is very easy to cast stones, but be careful you don't live in a glass house. Last time I checked people, this is not China and it is the home of the FREE. Each and every one of us has rights which were set down by our fore fathers and privacy is on of them. An immoral act is up to the individual person to decide it. Do I think what these Deputies did was immoral I don't know I was not there so I will not cast a stone! We all know that the press inflates stories to make papers sell. Thank you for your web site and keep up the good work!!!!
I couldn't agree more! I keep seeing all these comments being posted by nameless, faceless someones "Anonymous". Have the conviction (guts) to post a username or name. It's real easy to hide and make character assassinations.
