Observer asks Privette to resign - pressure mounts

The Charlotte Observer published an editorial today that asks Coy Privette to resign.
It's nice to see a newspaper getting it exactly right and saying what I've been thinking as well:

"his criminal actions highlight a lack of judgment. He championed morals to fuel his political career, and clearly did not practice what he preached."

Mr. Privette has received a very sweet deal in court the other day.
His criminal record will be expunged if he completes 48 hours of community service and serves a year of probation. For some strange reason he will not be prosecuted for filing a forged affidavit, which would carry much more severe penalties, even though that is why the whole investigation started in the first place.

And to respond to some republicans that tell me "what about Clinton?", there's a ton of difference between those cases. The most important being that Monica Lewinsky was not a prostitute! She didn't get paid for her services by blank checks that later got falsely reported stolen. It was sex between consenting adults. Furthermore, Bill Clintons political career wasn't build on being the "champion of morals". Bill Clinton also didn't need "psychological treatment", which Privette was ordered to get and is already receiving. Do you really want a politician who is supposed to represent and take decisions for you to have psychological problems?

Even though I'm definitely not a fan of Privette, I'm not asking him to resign because I like to get rid of him, but because it is the right thing to do.
If I had political motives I would ask him to stay on, because he'd be such an easy target in a next election and I'd love to see him replaced by a Democrat at that time.

However, If you claim to be the "party of family values", you should act like it.
Mr. Privette, resign now.

If you're reading the observer and have the ideals that you do, then the observer thwacking a religious conservative proven to be full of it shouldn't even raise on of your eyebrows.

As for his light sentence. It's structured sentencing and a democrat controlled legislature that are to blame there.

And as for Clinton: Sex between consenting adults? Yep: Coy Privette: Sex between consenting adults. But a 74 year old county commissioner probably doesn't have the swagger of Clinton. And you've got me there. Clinton never ran a campaign on morals...

Coy needed to go a long time ago but his "lemming" constituents bought into the "moralality is what makes a leader" speech time and time again...

It is encouraging to see the local paper take a stand and urge Privette to leave office. It is his high and mighty attitude that has led to Cabarrus County being viewed in such a poor light by many others in North Carolina.

I would hope that the grand jury that has been convened to investigate other politicians in this state will also take a look at Privette and begin to follow his money trail. Rumors have followed Privette for years about the sourcing of money for his campaigns. The pressure should not stop until Privette is out of office or has been fully investigated concerning his handling of campaign contributions over the last several years. The investigation should not be limited to just Privette but also include some of our other local politicians as well.

Breaking the law isn't always a big deal, we mess up at times and it many cases it's forgivable. Speeding tickets, running red lights and minor offenses such as those are tolerable, in my opinion, even when they involve local politicians as long as it's isn't habitual in nature.

A crime that undermines your credibility, integrity and moral standing should not be tolerated from those who lead the "parade of morality" and do so on a public stage. There should be measures in place that don't afford hypocrits such as these the opportunity to resume their posts "representing the publics best interest." He has shown that he can not act in his own best interest, should be really speak on my behalf....or yours?
